Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was established on 10 January 1997 and is a leading private university in Malaysia.

The campus is built on a 400 hectare (1,000 acres) site strategically located at Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak Darul Ridzuan, Malaysia. The university is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, the national oil and gas company of Malaysia.

UTP offers a wide range of industry-relevant engineering, science and technology programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It aims to produce well-rounded graduates with excellent leadership qualities and communication abilities.

The university conducts extensive research activities in collaboration with PETRONAS and other institutions and industries, locally and abroad, on six research focus and niche areas. They are self-sustainable building, transport infrastructure, health analytics, hydrocarbon recovery, contaminant management and autonomous system.

UTP has produced more than 15,000 graduates and currently has an enrolment of over 1,200 foundation students, 6,000 undergraduates and 1,200 postgraduates from more than 60 countries around the world.

This significant leap of 38 positions from its previous rank of 307 solidifies UTP’s position as a leading institution on the world stage.

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS malaysia's entry requirements

To enrol in Universiti Teknologi Petronas courses, you must meet one of the following in the criteria list below:

Bachelor in Business Management (Honours)

  • Diploma in a relevant field from a recognised institution with a minimum final CGPA of 2.00 and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics; OR
  • Matriculation/foundation in a relevant field from a recognised institution with a minimum final CGPA of 2.00 and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics; OR
  • A-Level or other equivalent qualification with at least a grade C in mathematics and two non-language subjects and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics; OR
  • ​STPM with a minimum of grade C in three subjects and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics; OR
  • ​International Baccalaureate (IB) with a minimum of Point 4 in mathematics and two other subjects and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics; OR
  • UEC - Senior Middle Level (SML) with a minimum of grade B in mathematics, English and three other subjects and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics; OR
  • ​Australian matriculation programme with a minimum of grade C (or 60 per cent) in mathematics/specialised mathematics and two other subjects and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics 

Master’s degrees by coursework

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 or an equivalent qualification from a recognised university; OR
  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree with a CGPA between 2.00 and 2.49 can be admitted, subject to passing UTP’s rigorous internal assessment; OR
  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree from a non-business discipline must undergo prerequisite courses​ in business; OR
  • Candidates with an APEL A certificate (APEL T-7) are eligible for admission

Master’s degrees by research

  • Bachelor of Science in a business studies discipline with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 or equivalent in a relevant field from a recognised university; OR
  • Candidates with a Bachelor of Science in a business studies discipline with a CGPA between 2.50 and 2.74​ can be admitted and must pass UTP’s rigorous internal assessment; OR
  • Candidates with a Bachelor of Science in a business studies discipline with a CGPA between 2.00 and 2.49​ can be admitted and must have five years of work experience and pass UTP’s rigorous internal assessment; OR
  • Candidates with an APEL A certificate (APEL T-7) are eligible for admission

PhDs by research

  • Master’s degree (MQA, level 7) in a relevant field or its equivalent from a recognised university

When applying for your preferred programme, you are required to pay a one-off registration fee. International students will also have to pay for other admission costs.

Scholarships & Funding at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS

facilities and accommodation at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS

UTM provides on-campus accommodation for more than 12,000 students in its 10 residential colleges and 301 family housing units for students who bring along their spouse and children. There are two types of housing available for the students. One of which is the apartment type (a-two-room and a-three-room apartment) and the other is the town house with two rooms. Each housing unit furnished with basic facilities such as furniture and refrigerator for the students’ convenience. All residential colleges are equipped with cafeteria, multipurpose hall, minimarts, laundry services, sport facilities, guest rooms and leisure rooms. The rental rates for UTM hostels vary from MYR300.00 to MYR600.00 per month while the housing rental rates vary from MYR480.00 to MYR1,100.00 per month.

UTP has a dedicated student services unit to assist students in residential related matter like off and on-campus housing, understanding tenancy information and dealing with agents and landlords. Generally, the rooms provided on campus are on a two-bedded or twin-sharing basis.

Student will be provided with accommodation for their whole education period in UTP. The cost of accommodation at UTP is at RM260/month (*USD60/month) for both Foundation Programme and Undergraduate Programme

UTP Health Centre
The wellbeing and health of our students and faculty are among our top priorities. UTP has its very own health centre – staffed by experienced medical personnel – to provide emergency and routine health services 24 hours, 7 days a week.
