Introduction to Monash University Malaysia

Established in 1998, Monash University is a private institution that is known to be the first overseas university in Malaysia. This campus in Malaysia is the 3rd biggest campus of the university. The university is associated with the Sunway Education Group, the Group of Eight and the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning. In 1990, the university collaborated with the Sunway University. Monash University in Malaysia began its first class with only 261 students in the year of establishment. Gradually, the number of enrolments grew, and by 2007, the university consisted of about 3,300 students.

The university mainly focuses on the research-related to medicine & health, biotechnology, economic & business modelling, agricultural business, banking and electronic test technology. The university has received accreditation for its MBBS course from the Australian Medical Council. The business school has been recognised by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the School of Pharmacy has been accredited by the Lembaga Farmasi Malaysia, while the Institution of Engineers Australia and the Board of Engineers Malaysia have given accreditation to the Engineering courses at the university.

The university’s campus comprises seven schools, namely the School of Engineering, School of Business, School of Information Technology, School of Arts & Social Sciences, School of Pharmacy, School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the School of Science. Besides the schools and centres, the campus also features accommodation facilities for the students. They are provided with all the facilities required at the campus.

Health Sciences Facilities

There is also a Clinical School on the grounds of the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru for the students. It offers a clinical skills lab, specimen lab, pathology resource room, library, student common area, open learning centre and a 70-seat lecture theatre. Also, there are state-of-the-art histopathology and anatomy labs and well-equipped learning suites for other relevant studies. The labs here have specialist equipment including live-cell and single-cell imaging microscopes. Apart from this, the medical research clusters include research labs for cancer research, toxicology, infectious diseases, diabetes and endocrinology, and epidemiology.

Pharmacy Facilities

Pharmacy studies at Monash use high-tech virtual practice environments (VPE) to replace the traditional learning model. VPE provides a safe and supervised environment where students are exposed to processes encountered in practical placements, greatly enhancing their confidence, knowledge and skills before entering the community as student pharmacists. The Professional Practice Suite (PPS) physical space on the campus is used for the VPE learning.

Engineering Facilities

There are 24 sophisticated labs for practical, experimental and research work in areas like robotics, computer systems, network and signals, electrical power, solar power, applied mechanics, mechatronics, electronics, physics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, chemical engineering and sports physiology.

Science Facilities

The Malaysian campus also boasts 40 science labs for teaching and research. They include a herbarium and labs for applied immunology and pathology, animal and plant tissue culture, genetics, microbiology, human physiology and biochemistry.

More than 70 rooms provide support to the labs. They include an animal house, tissue culture cold rooms and spaces for specialised instruments and photomicroscopy.

Arts & Social Sciences

There are specialized working areas such as a state-of-the-art radio, and TV studio and laboratories for multimedia, journalism and communications.

General Learning Resources & Facilities

Auditoriums and Classrooms: Classes at Monash University Malaysia take place in spaces including two large auditoriums (350 people each), a 150-capacity plenary theatre, three medium lecture theatres (150 students each) and six smaller theatres (120 students each).

There are plenty of rooms dedicated for tutorial and workshops in modern teaching spaces that support small-group discussion and interaction. Also, there are laboratories dedicated to IT teaching and research, a networking lab and a specialized multimedia teaching lab.

  • STPM – CGPA of 2.00

These requirements vary for undergraduate, postgraduate coursework and research degree programs. Some courses might have additional requirements (e.g. aptitude test, interview), so please check specific course requirements very carefully.

Monash University Malaysia's English Score Required

For entry to Monash University, you must meet the minimum English language requirements except for Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine which requires higher English requirement.

You can demonstrate your English language proficiency through one of the following:

studying English at Year 12 or equivalent
studying at an institution where English is the language of instruction
English Proficiency Tests
Monash English.

If you've completed several measures of English proficiency over a period of time, the highest valid measure will be accepted as long as it's been taken within the required time limitations. Time limits may apply to the evidence you provide to demonstrate your English language proficiency.

Monash University Malaysia Facilities & Resources

The services and facilities include a television, bed-side table, a small kitchen, an attached washroom and a wardrobe. The library at the campus consists of a huge collection of journals, books, textbooks and research papers. The students can also access the electronic resources available at the library. The campus is nearby many cafes and restaurants. A few medical shops, stationery shops and general stores are also close to the campus.

Multi-level library: Students love to camp in the inviting and spacious campus library that provides all the comfort, condusiveness, materials and online research resource for students to power through a 5 hour study session with ease.

Professional Practice Suite (PPS): Costing $1.8 million, the PPS is the first of its kind in Malaysia, with 2 large, flexible tutorial rooms each with individual computer facilities that can accommodate up to 25 students; 8 consultation rooms for professional consultation and assessment; and a social learning space for informal work groups.

Clubs and societies: There are more than 40 clubs and societies in this university for students with different interests.

Student lounge: The student lounge on the campus has a pool table, foosball, TV and other recreational facilities. The lounge is located at MUSA Building Level 1.

Multi-sport court: There is also a multi-sport court for arranging game events like futsal, basketball or handball.

Badminton court: There is a badminton court on the campus to provide an exciting sports experience to the Monash students and staff. It is relatively new and started in 2014.

Gym: For avid muscle builders, students can hit the gym at Level 2, which provides standard gym equipment and spacious areas for workouts.
